dose the job
I've applied this varnish to over 20 square meters of decking. so far it has kept the decking non slip and has retained its original wood grain.
Product has certainly made a difference to the safety of our decking. Well happy with the results.
Having tiptoed over a lethal slippery deck last winter I decided to sort it out ready for the return of the wet weather, and this stuff seems perfect. It's got very fine granules which gives the deck a very fine gritty surface, not really enough to feel uncomfortable in bare feet, but enough to stop my shoes sliding after the rain. Just what I wanted. If I run my finger over the deck I can feel it, which gives me confidence it's doing it's job, but it's not rough. Finish is a nice shade als…o, brings out the natural colour of the wood. After some research this is what I did:1. Jet washed deck, but not too close or fierce as that can splinter the wood and breakup the surface, so just enough to wash off the grime.2. Scrubbed the deck with Sodium Percarbonate solution. As I understand it, this is an oxygen bleach which breaks down naturally. Left that for 30 minutes followed by another jet wash. This really cleaned off the black marks and I'm glad I did this. I have other areas of deck which I skipped this before, but this got the deck much cleaner.3. Left deck to dry for a week, probably more than necessary, but I did this over two weekends.4. Applied first coat, it suggests a roller, but I used an old fence brush stuck on the end of a brush handle, but brushed very lightly and in small sections to avoid brushing of the fine granules. This used one tin, I'd forgotten quite how much decking I have, approx 20sq metres or maybe slightly more.5. Left it to dry, seemed reasonable but when wet, some areas still a little slippy, far better than before, but was not quite happy.6. Applied second coat. This was easier to apply and made a lot of difference. Deck really feels far less slippery now and when wet, I can feel the resistance. My advice.- Estimate deck area properly before you start, I should have got two tins and it recommends only a few days between coats.- When you apply this, use something with a fairly wide surface, one deck width is good, and something with a long handle, or can be attached to a long handle. I have stained decks with a normal short handled brush and next day regretted all the bending, but with a long handle, and on a sunny days, it's quite relaxing to stand up straight and apply the coating at a leisurely pace.Spring update: Now that winter has passed here is what I have found. I had a couple of places where I had slopped the coating on too thick, this is not noticeable in dry/ warm weather but shows up more in the wet/cold, and it effectively looks a bit patchy. It's not a major problem because I'm the only one using my deck over winter, it looks fine for the summer garden parties and I prefer grip over perfection, but if you are a perfectionist then you'll want to favour multiple thin coatings, watch out for blobs of coating and thin them out before the coating dries. I found my deck is not slippy when wet, but I still tread very carefully after a heavy frost or when there is ice or snow about, but then that true of most surfaces over winter.
Another quality product from Blackfriar, used this for years now
Have just had new decking installed and did not want to spoil the colour by putting a coloured paint on it, so I opted for a clear anti slip deck coating. It really looks very nice and is certainly not slippy at the present but will have to wait until it ages before I can say for certain how effective it is.
Very well packaged and signed one way up to avoid threat of leakage. Have not been able to use product yet as it must be applied to a Dry surface.......weather has been to wet to allow drying of the decking. So I should have got this job done in the hot summer.
fantastic price and fast delivery
not used it yet as the weather is cold and I am not going to use it until summer makes itd mind up.
Great product, only thi g is it sticks like glue to whatever I wS using to apply it with, even gloves. But once dry great product
